Insurance. It’s not a word that has too many fun connotations, but often it is a necessary part of life. Lots of folk don’t worry about insurance for their bicycle, but if the cost of replacement is something that could lose you some sleep, it’s worth considering – specialist cover in particular. Your household contents insurance may well cover your bike if it's stolen (up to a certain value), but what about accidental damage? Or…not-so-accidental damage? We work with a couple of particular suppliers (others are available, check them all out) who really know their aero rims from their dropper posts, and this can prove to be pretty useful!
Laka Insurance
Laka offers a pretty unusual model of cover: everybody pays into a collective pot to cover the claims that have been made. No fixed premiums based on twisted data, it costs what it costs. This means your monthly premium will change, though it is capped so you won’t get any nasty surprises. There are no annual contracts, and no excess to pay in the event of a claim either. 20% of your premium pays for the running costs of Laka itself, and the rest pays for claims.
Laka offers two levels of personal cover: Pro and Core – the former covering some extras like racing and worldwide cover for riding abroad. If you need to claim, you’ll be talking to a fellow cyclist, and you’ll usually reach an agreement within a day. Oh, and you can also pick up a little discount if you use the code BRIXTON30. Not bad!
CAMS
Cycling Accident Management Services, better known as CAMS, are the cycle-specific division of Direct Accident Management, who have been handling claims around car and bike incidents since 1996. They have a 24/7 service to help get you back on your feet – and on two wheels! – should things go wrong out on the road and it wasn’t your fault. They essentially act on your behalf to recover your losses from the other party’s insurance company. If you need a new bike, it will be replaced upfront without waiting for the insurance claim process to complete.
We’ve had plenty of recommendations for these guys through our customers, a lot of which stems from the relationship CAMS has with repairers, brands, and bike shops like us!
